Why asbestos should never be a DIY job

Is your garage roof asbestos?
Most corrugated cement garage and shed roofs fitted before the year 2000 contain asbestos. You usually can't tell just by looking — but these are the tell-tale signs.
Corrugated grey sheets
Wavy cement sheeting, often faded to a dull grey with moss, lichen or surface pitting after years outdoors.
Fitted before 2000
Asbestos cement was widely used for garage and outbuilding roofs until it was banned in the UK in 1999.
Cracking or crumbling
Brittle, delaminating or broken sheets are the highest risk — that's when fibres can be released.
